SOPHIE JOINT: Piano on the Pier

Pianist Sophie Joint from Glasgow grew up playing classical, Scottish and Irish traditional music. A graduate of The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Sophie performs and teaches within the Scottish trad music scene.

Sophie asked me to create a music video and shoot some stills for her debut album “Light on Water”, for the track “Apricity”. Sophie’s concept was to take a grand piano and place it on a pier in Granton Beach on the north side of Edinburgh. This presented an obvious challenge however, we were not swayed by the task at hand.

We enlisted the services of Pianodrome in Granton who provided not only the piano, but also installed it and removed it from the pier when we were done shooting.

It was an absolutely freezing day but the light was incredible and despite the almost frostbitten fingers, we were delighted with the results.

Interestingly, the piano on the pier created quite the stir amongst Grantown locals and after going somewhat viral after photos were posted to X, Sophie appeared on BBC news to put some closure to the mystery.
